Skin and Germs

Protecting Skin From Dry Winter Weather

•To begin with, I always start with a moisturizer. Personally, I prefer one that includes a sunscreen but either way, using a moisturizer helps lock in your own moisture providing a protective barrier between you and the elements. If you are like me, you may be good at remembering face and hands but forget the ears and the back of the neck.

•Limit the really hot baths and showers. It can zap the moisture right out of your skin. Keep the water at a moderate temperature and avoid harsh soaps. An alternative is to use one of the many crème body washes that contain moisturizers. And get that moisturizer on while the skin is still damp!

•A great diaper ointment with Zinc Oxide like Dr. Smith’s not only soothes rough, red skin but it creates a terrific protective shield against the elements

Heloise Hint - Prevent The Spread of Germs With This Cost Saver

Don’t know about you, but we go through a lot of tissue this time of year! Love the little boutique boxes, but they are expensive.

A close friend’s mother solved the problem when her little girls, 3 of them about 2 years apart, all had colds at the same time. She gave them their own a roll of toilet paper. Hey, toilet paper is soft, works just fine and is cheaper than tissue.

My take? I pull the cardboard out of the center, then put the soft roll inside of a square box, (you can open the bottom and put it in) or simply place in the pretty decorative holder on my makeup counter. Just pull out some tissue from the middle and it unfurls like a rope. This is handy to use removing makeup, smudges from a little face and cleaning up little spills too.

What’s the advantage? You can safely toss this into the toilet. DO NOT put facial tissue, dental floss, hair or cigarettes down a commode, especially if your home is on a septic system! These items will not break down in a septic system, and can clog up older plumbing.
