•Consider investing in a less expensive keyboard and mouse for kid-time
•Setting a time limit from the get-go
Keeping Kids Safe With Social Media

•I do allow my children computer and game time. I know some may not. But I do not allow them unlimited and unfettered time. I believe in the power of the kitchen timer. I set that timer and its power is absolute. This limits arguments – I am not saying time is up, the timer is.
•Also, I believe in proximity. Our computer is in our breakfast area, visible from the living room and kitchen. I usually allow the computer time while I do my kitchen chores. This gives me direct view of the screen while I get things done.
•Check on your browser’s settings. Most will allow you to create parental controls and directly block individual sites. Not a perfect system and NEVER a replacement for parental observation, but it does help layer protection.
•Now as a parent, I think balance and education are the keys, as well. I do have pictures of my kids on the internet. I avoid pictures that allow their location to be determined. I NEVER post pictures with other children without their parent’s explicit permission. Again, not a perfect system but I think a balanced one.
•Keeping up with Facebook settings is tricky, too. Participating in applications and “liking” groups can increase your exposure. I recommend checking your privacy settings on a regular basis. While big changes make the news, sometimes more subtle shifts can happen without much publicity. If you share info about your kids, you want to make sure it is only with whom you deem appropriate.
